Houston falls to 0-4 in preseason

Justin Fields leads Bears with 118 rushing yards, two touchdowns

The Chicago Bears opened the NFL preseason with a 21-17 victory over the Houston Texans in the 2024 NFL Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio on Thursday night.

Bears quarterback Justin Fields led the way for Chicago, rushing for 118 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries. He also completed 7 of 11 passes for 62 yards.

The Texans were led by quarterback Davis Mills, who completed 14 of 24 passes for 154 yards and a touchdown. Running back Dameon Pierce added 62 rushing yards on 16 carries.

The Bears took an early lead in the first quarter when Fields ran for a 50-yard touchdown. The Texans responded with a 49-yard field goal from Ka'imi Fairbairn, but the Bears extended their lead to 14-3 on Fields' second rushing touchdown, a 14-yarder.

The Texans closed the gap to 14-10 with a Mills-to-Nico Collins touchdown pass late in the second quarter, but the Bears took a 17-10 lead into halftime after a 31-yard field goal from Cairo Santos.

The Texans tied the game at 17-17 with a Fairbairn field goal early in the third quarter, but the Bears regained the lead for good when Santos hit a 39-yard field goal with 4:12 remaining in the game.

The Bears defense came up with a big play in the final minutes of the game when they sacked Mills and forced a fumble, which was recovered by Bears defensive end Trevis Gipson.

With the win, the Bears improved to 1-0 in the preseason, while the Texans fell to 0-4.

The Bears will host the Kansas City Chiefs in their second preseason game on Aug. 19, while the Texans will travel to New Orleans to face the Saints on Aug. 20.
