Wa State Patrol Warns Of Recent Bump Carjackings On I 5

WA State Patrol warns of rise in 'bump' carjackings on I-5

Bump and Rob

The Washington State Patrol (WSP) released a public safety alert on Wednesday, warning drivers of a new carjacking trend on Interstate 5. The warning comes after a rise in "bump and rob" incidents, where criminals deliberately hit a vehicle from behind to force it to stop and then rob the driver.

According to WSP, the incidents usually occur at night on busy stretches of the freeway and often involve multiple suspects in a stolen vehicle. After the initial bump, the suspects exit their vehicle and approach the victim's car, armed with weapons. They demand the victim's belongings, including their vehicle, and often flee the scene before police arrive.

The WSP urges drivers to be aware of the trend and take precautions to avoid becoming a victim. Motorists should be especially vigilant when driving at night, particularly on isolated stretches of the freeway, and should immediately report any suspicious activity to 911.

Safety Tips

- Be aware of your surroundings and pay attention to other vehicles around you. - If you are bumped from behind, do not stop your car immediately. Instead, continue driving to a well-lit area, such as a gas station or public parking lot. - Call 911 immediately and report the incident to the police. - If possible, get a description of the suspect's vehicle and license plate number. - Do not attempt to confront the suspects yourself.

What is Being Done

- Troopers are increasing patrols and conducting targeted enforcement operations on I-5 in an effort to deter and apprehend suspects involved in "bump and rob" incidents. - WSP is also working with local law enforcement agencies to share information and identify potential suspects. - The WSP is reminding drivers to be aware of their surroundings and to report any suspicious activity to 911.

In addition to the tips above, WSP also recommends that drivers take the following precautions: - Keep your doors locked and windows up while driving. - Avoid driving alone at night. - Park your car in a well-lit area. - Be aware of your surroundings and report any suspicious activity to the police.
