WikiLeaks' Julian Assange Faces Renewed Extradition Demand from US
Allegations of Conspiracy and Obstruction of Justice
Prosecution Unseals Charges Linking Assange to Edward Snowden's Escape
In a significant development, prosecutors in the United States have unsealed conspiracy charges against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. The charges allege that Assange conspired with former US Army intelligence analyst, Chelsea Manning, to obtain and release classified information. This revelation has sparked a fresh extradition demand by the US government.
The charges stem from the 2013 incident when Assange and other WikiLeaks associates allegedly assisted Edward Snowden in fleeing from US law enforcement officials. Snowden, a former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor, leaked highly sensitive classified information to the media, which was subsequently published on WikiLeaks.
According to the indictment, Assange and Manning allegedly collaborated to obtain the classified information from the US databases. They are also accused of conspiring to obstruct justice by attempting to prevent Manning from being apprehended by law enforcement.
Assange, who is currently facing extradition proceedings in the UK, has denied the charges and vowed to fight against extradition to the US. However, the unsealing of these new charges is likely to intensify pressure on the UK government to deliver Assange to the US authorities.
